Keeping your children at the heart of all child custody matters can help to ensure you are making decisions that are best for them. While it might seem like it is easy to do this, you might find that it is rather challenging at some points. Just the fact that you have to deal with your ex about the children might make this hard.
One of the most important things that you can do is to never fight with your ex in front of the children. Your kids are going through a stressful enough time without having to be privy to the uncensored points of an argument. If you and your ex need to have a discussion that might get heated, it is best to do that when the children aren't around.
Another important factor to think about is how much impact your words can have on your children. With this in mind, you shouldn't ever speak ill of your ex. You might think negative thoughts, but don't express those to the children or speak of them when they are around. Even if you can't stand your ex, he or she is still your child's other parent.
You also need to make sure that you're emotionally supporting your children. Don't let yourself get so engrossed in the adult matters of the divorce that you forget your children are dealing with what is likely the biggest life change with which they've ever had to deal. Try to make pleasant memories with them. Start new traditions you can enjoy together. Set clear rules, expectations, rewards and consequences so that you are setting them up for success in the new way of life.
