What to Do if you Get into a Car Accident

Car collisions happen. That's why they call them accidents. We don't mean to or want to hit other vehicles (or be hit for that matter), but that's life and we have to deal with it accordingly. If you have ever been in a car accident, you know how stressful it can be. You or the other person may be injured or your car may have been totaled. So if you are unlucky in the near future and get into an accident, here are a few things to remember:

• Exchange Information - no matter the extent of the damage, always exchange information with the other driver. This includes name, address, phone number, license plate number, and applicable insurance information.
• Be Safe - If your car is still drivable, make sure you are not endangering yourself or others with its presence. If the accident was small, attempt to move off to the side of the road to prevent another accident from happening.
• Call the police - By Washington statute, the police MUST be called if anyone was injured in the accident or if the accident resulted in over $700 in damage. Not only will the police record what happened, but they can help with the next point.
• Know what to say - Never, EVER admit that the accident was your fault. Only restate the facts as you remember them. Always call your insurance carrier and let them know you were in an accident, but never give a recorded statement to the other party's insurance.
• Snap pictures - Whether with your phone or a camera, always take a picture of the vehicle damage and the accident scene. Having both of these will help your claim.
• Document all injuries - If you or the other party complain of any injuries at the scene make sure you either tell the police (who may call for an ambulance) or write them down for later.
